Swimming competitions at the Olympics have always been entertaining. U.S.A. has been at the forefront for the past decade, with Michael Phelps leading the way. He took home a record 8 gold medals in swimming at the 2008 Games. Ryan Lochte made a name for himself at the 2012 show as well.
Well, at the 2016 Rio Olympics, the women started things off in grand fashion. Hungarian swimmer Katinka Hosszu took part in the 400 IM event. Known as the “Iron Lady”, Hosszu smashed the record by about two seconds, finishing at 4:26:36.
Those who watched this event flipped out on Twitter over what they just saw. Hosszu was given plenty of praise for her record-breaking accomplishment.

This is a terrific start for Hosszu in the Olympics. She is going to be featured in other swimming competitions, and has the chance to break more records, and win for medals. This will make her appearances highly-anticipated, as viewers will want to see if Hosszu can repeat her record-breaking performance.
Maybe Hosszu’s performance will give the women’s swimming events more recognition than years past. Dynamic athletes like her will draw the attention, which can only be seen as a positive for the next three weeks.
