Saturday kicked off the start of men’s and women’s singles table tennis as the preliminaries for both were completed as well as the first rounds.
Some familiar names dominated such as the United States’ Lily Zhang who won her first round matchup as well as second round in impressive fashion. She lost just one game out of nine and breezed her way into the third round where she will played Hyowon Suh of South Korea on Monday.
Zhang is the United States’ best chance for a gold medal in the women’s singles since Yue Wu was eliminated in the second round on Saturday evening.
The United States didn’t fare well on the men’s side, though, as Yijun Feng was knocked out in the first round and it looks like China may be on its way to yet another domination of the Olympics table tennis field.
The entire second round and half of the third round for the men will be played on Sunday while the second half of the women’s second round and half the third round will also take place. Elite action is just starting as you’ll see some of the top men in the world compete Sunday in Germany’s Timo Boll and China Zhang Jike.
