Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas drew some unnecessary ire for not placing her hand over her heart during the national anthem.

The USA women’s gymnastics team, self-titled the “Final Five,” completed a dominating performance Tuesday to win gold in the team portion of Olympics gymnastics competition.

Every medal-winning performance is accompanied by the playing of the winning nation’s national anthem, which meant the five young gymnastics were able to take in the joy of their victory with the playing of the Star Spangled Banner.

While Americans around the nation should have been proud of the young women, there were those who are great at finding anything negative in the most positive of situations.

Gabby Douglas was the subject of the negativity, as she did not put her hand over her heart during the playing of the national anthem. That is correct. Some divine individuals took to Twitter to cast shame upon the Olympian for blatantly disrespecting her country.

Including the tweets in this post would draw needless attention to those individuals who wanted to bring down a young woman who has devoted most of her life to being great in what she does. Luckily, Douglas is a strong individual who didn’t pay too much attention to the hate.

There was no real need to apologize, but the fact Douglas was able to show remorse for something so many do is just another example of why she is a role model to so many around the nation and around the world.

Those getting angry at something like this have likely done the same thing before, except they weren’t being broadcasted on television to the entire world. Sometimes it is better to keep overtly negative opinions to one’s self if the opinion only serves to, for lack of a better phrase, “be a hater.”
