The first day of Olympics table tennis team play took place on Friday, so who came out on top?

The first week of table tennis is in the books and singles play has concluded with the Chinese athletes coming out on top. Ding Ning and Ma Long brought home gold for China while Li Xiaoxia and Zhang Jike won the silver medals.

Most of the top singles performers are participating in team play which begun on Friday night in Rio.

China has been dominant in this sport ever since it was introduced to the Olympics in 1988. Will there be a country that can dethrone them in this year’s games?

Here are the teams that survived round one of team play on Friday and will be advancing to the quarterfinals on Saturday.

Men’s team table tennis

It was a dominating performance for the Chinese national team yet again as they demolished Nigeria in straight sets. Unfortunately, the United States also suffered a dominating loss to Sweden.

South Korea topped Brazil in straight sets while Great Britain knocked out France. The second half of men’s team play continues Saturday.

Women’s team table tennis

The Chinese team got off to a strong start on Friday, beating hosting Brazil in straight sets 3-0. It looks like they’re on a mission to repeat yet again as gold medal winners.
