Olympic equestrian jumping results: August 16

Team U.S.A. powered over the team jumping qualifier course with three clear rounds at the Rio Olympics today. Germany, the Netherlands and Brazil are tied with the U.S. for first place.

In his first Olympics, Chicago-native Kent Farrington is laying it down for the American team. With his clear rounds Sunday and today, Farrington riding Voyeur is having the best-ever first Olympics.

It’s teammate Lucy Davis’ first Olympics and she got in a groove riding Barron today, delivering a clear round. Olympic veteran McLain Ward on Azur was in good form going clear, while multiple Olympic medalist Beezie Madden and her horse Cortes C aren’t in sync and it’s showing with jumping and time faults.

Eight teams will be moving forward to the second day of the team competition. They are:

  • U.S.A.
  • Germany
  • Netherlands
  • Brazil
  • France
  • Canada
  • Sweden
  • Switzerland

In the individual standings, Kent Farrington is tied for first place with 10 others.

Riders disqualified over excessive use of spurs

The Horse and Hound reports that two riders were disqualified for drawing blood in today’s jumping:

"Two team riders were disqualified from the showjumping competition today at the Deodoro venue at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.Home competitor, Brazil’s Stephan de Freitas Barcha and the Ukraine’s Cassio Rivetti were both  disqualified for over use of spurs.They were both disqualified from the competition following the post-jumping FEI stewards; inspection, under art 242.3.1 of the FEI Jumping Rules, which concern the presence of blood on the horse.It states:Mandatory Disqualification 3.1 Horses bleeding on the flank(s), in the mouth or nose or marks indicating excessive use of spurs or of the whip anywhere on the Horse (in minor cases of blood in the mouth, such as where a Horse appears to have bitten its tongue or lip, Officials may authorize the rinsing or wiping of the mouth and allow the Athlete to continue; any further evidence of blood in the mouth will result in Disqualification.)"

The Brazilian team is appealing the decision.
