Live stream info and how to watch Olympic show jumping online on Tuesday, August 16.

Tuesday is the start of the Equestrian show jumping competition. Riders took their horse around the course on Sunday to establish the competition order for the teams. The team scoring starts with a blank slate; the score will carry through when calculating individual rider standings.

The show jumping courses at Deodoro equestrian center are 12 to 14 jumps. A jump may be a single effort, or if a combination, two or three efforts. The jumps are built with rails or wooden bricks designed to fall if knocked by any part of the horse or rider. The broad water jump has a tape on the landing, so footfalls that fall short of the required distance can be observed.

Fences may be verticals — straight up and down, or spreads — they have width as well as height. Sundays course had square oxers — a spread jump where the back pole is the same height as the front top pole — that proved challenging when the horse and rider failed to accommodate for the extra spread.

Combinations usually include both vertical and spread obstacles. The related distances between the jumps are key. For example, in a triple combination, if the first jump is an oxer where horses tend to jump big, the course designer will set a vertical second jump on a close distance that calls for a short stride. After the vertical, he’ll set an oxer on a long two-stride distance challenging the horse to extend but requiring precision on the takeoff to clear the back pole.
