Linebacker Brian Urlacher is perhaps the most famous athlete to come from New Mexico. Urlacher went to high school in the state and attended the University of New Mexico. After a stellar career in college football, Urlacher spent his entire career with the Chicago Bears. Urlacher went to eight Pro Bowls and was named the 2005 NFL Defensive Player of the Year. He will likely be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Cathy Carr is a swimmer who won two gold medals in the 1972 Summer Olympics. She won a gold medal in the 100m breaststroke and the 4x100m medley relay. Carr attended the University of New Mexico and is currently a fourth grade teacher.
Kathy Whitworth won 98 tournaments as a professional golfer. Her 88 LPGA tournament victories are the most of all time. She belongs on New Mexico’s Mount Rushmore due to her run of dominance that stretched over 20 years. Whitworth won six majors during her career as she became one of golf’s first female superstars.
Tommy McDonald was born in Roy, New Mexico and dominated for the Philadelphia Eagles in the 1950’s and 1960’s. He also played for the Dallas Cowboys, Los Angeles Rams, Atlanta Falcons and Cleveland Browns. Of his six Pro Bowl appearances, five of them came with the Eagles.
