Three U.S. riders are competing in individual show jumping at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games. If their form continues, Kent Farrington, McLain Ward and Lucy Davis are front-runners for individual medals.

Individual show jumping takes place Friday, August 19 at Rio’s Deodoro Equestrian Complex. Based on three qualifying rounds that are run concurrently with the team competition, the top 35 individual riders will start the day with clear slates, as no scores from previous rounds carry over. A maximum of three riders are permitted to represent one nation.

The contest consists of morning and afternoon rounds. After all the riders have completed the course in the morning, the top 20 will ride in the second round. Both rounds will be conducted under the same rules as team jumping. If there is a tie for a medal placing, the riders will jump off over a shortened course with time take into consideration — the fastest trip with the least faults wins.

It’s been a long week for the show jumping Olympians. The heat takes its toll on horses and riders, as does the intense pressure to perform. The horses have been asked to navigate around three massive jumping courses which are physically demanding for even the most fit horse. To win the individual show jumping gold, the horse and rider combination will draw on reserves of physical strength and mental toughness to be first among their peers.
