In the latest NFL injury updates, New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis and Sebastian Vollmer will be out for at least the start of the season or longer.

The New England Patriots’ roster is seeing quite a few issues heading into the new season. Their star NFL quarterback will serve a four-game suspension. Now it seems one of their top running backs will be unavailable for a good bit of the season. A key member of the defensive personnel will also be out for the near future.

On Sunday, NESN reported that Dion Lewis will begin the season on the Pats’ PUP list. The running back will require a second knee surgery. This comes after he tore his ACL back in the Patriots’ Nov. 8 win over the Redskins. Jim McBride tweeted the news earlier in the day, indicating his “Timetable for return is uncertain.”

Not only is Lewis a recent injury from the New England roster, but so is Sebastian Vollmer. According to NBC Sports, he is likely to be headed to the injured reserve list as the season begins.

The defensive tackle was reported to have an undisclosed injury and could have been placed on the PUP list as well. However, NFL teams can bring in a player from injured reserve during the season. That’s potentially good news for the Pats and Vollmer.

Tom Brady also joined the list of hurt Patriots this past week. On Friday night, Brady sliced his thumb with some scissors ahead of a potential preseason start. The Pats’ quarterback had been attempting to pry something off his cleats at the time. His return timetable is also unknown, but he will also be out for the first four games of the season due to “Deflategate.”

The Patriots kick off their season with a Sunday Night Football game on Sep. 11 at the Arizona Cardinals. So far, that looks like a “W” on the schedule for the home team, but never underestimate Bill Bellichick’s ability to improvise when he’s got a bit less to work with.
