11. The Palestra

Basketball is everything in Philadelphia. Whether it’s the NBA’s 76ers or the many great Division I college programs, everybody in the City of Brotherly Love loves hoops. And they all know how important the Palestra is to the city’s sports fabric.

Known as the Cathedral of College Basketball, the Palestra has been home to the Penn Quakers since 1927 and, most importantly, hosts the annual Big Five Tournament between major Philadelphia collegiate basketball teams: Penn, the Temple Owls, the Saint Joseph’s Hawks, the LaSalle Explorers and the Villanova Wildcats.

This annual round-robin tournament has been held at the Palestra since 1955. Though it only seats 8,275 people, folks in attendance never seem to doubt the basketball atmosphere of Philadelphia’s most sacred court.

Given how much collegiate basketball means to Philadelphia, it seems unlikely a few late fans of the city’s Big Five teams haven’t stumbled into the Palestra to cheer on either the Quakers, the Wildcats, the Explorers, the Owls or the Hawks.
