29. Kinnick Stadium

For many folks in the midwest, fall Saturdays are all about Big 10 football. The Big 10 has many iconic venues, but the University of Iowa’s Kinnick Stadium is definitely the most likely to harbor a presence from the afterlife.

Iowa City is one of the best college towns in America and Kinnick Stadium is always packed to the brim with rowdy members of Hawkeye Nation on fall Saturdays. From pre-World War II to the Hayden Fry era to the current Kirk Ferentz era, Iowa has had great football tradition for generations.

The main reason Kinnick Stadium has haunted potential is the man for whom it is named: 1939 Heisman Trophy Winner Nile Kinnick. Kinnick was everything for the Hawkeyes in the late ’30s, but tragically lost his life in 1943 at the age of 24.

Iowa has had some great players over the years, but none will probably ever eclipse the legacy of the Heisman Trophy winning tailback. The Hawkeyes struggled for decades after Kinnick’s death, but became a strong Big 10 program under Fry’s leadership in the ’70s and ’80s, while Ferentz has done a fine job since taking over from Fry.

Kinnick has to be smiling from somewhere in his stadium when his Hawkeyes take on rivals like Iowa State, Wisconsin or Nebraska. No doubt he’s enjoyed seeing Iowa football succeed in the decades after his death.
