His legacy with the Penn State Nittany Lions football was tarnished by his role in the Jerry Sandusky scandal, but the ghost of long-time Penn State football coach Joe Paterno is at Beaver Stadium every day with out fail.

Paterno helped turn a rural, small state school into a national powerhouse on the football field from 1966 to 2011. Penn State won two National Championships (1982, 1986) and three Big 10 Championships (1994, 2005, 2009) under Paterno’s guidance.

With a 106,572 seating capacity, Beaver Stadium is the third largest sports stadium in the world, and the second biggest in the Western Hemisphere. Penn State is still dealing with the aftermath of the Sandusky scandal, but it has an on-field football tradition to be proud of.

No late player or coach in American sports is more likely to watch their former team play than Paterno. He may have passed away in 2012 from lung cancer, but there’s no doubt he’s very much alive in spirit at Beaver Stadium.
