19. Antonio Gates

A five-team All-Pro tight end and eight-time Pro Bowler, Gates could have called it a career years ago and let his body rest. Could have quietly slipped away, a San Diego legend, perhaps to return in a few years as a studio analyst or to be feted at halftime of future San Diego Monday Night Football games. Instead, in 2015 Gates was suspended for using performance-enhancing drugs. Most people in our world would probably condemn that sort of thing. In a zombie apocalypse, those action takes on another meaning entirely.

When someone with the kind of career Gates enjoyed faces questions about its legitimacy, it touches a raw nerve in us. It’s the Garden of Eden quandary: would you trade it all for just a little more? There’s an evolutionary advantage to greed – wanting more doesn’t always mean getting more, but those who get more tend to want more. In a zombie world, Gates is your friend who wants you to trust the stranger and agree to go with him to his “compound.” They could end up saving your life someday, or they could put you in chains. Or worse.
