College Football Rankings 2016: Week 2 AP Poll winners and losers
Winner 3: Texas Longhorns (Unranked to No. 11)
Notre Dame was ranked No. 10 and expected to roll through Austin, Texas for a relatively easy win over the Longhorns. Charlie Strong has been building a solid team over the past couple of years, but Texas seemed destined for another six or seven-win season.
Knowing that a win over the 10th-ranked team in the land could go a long way when it comes to confidence, the teeming masses inside Darrell K. Royal Stadium were rowdy as all get out. Starting a true freshman quarterback, Shane Buechele, was a scary thought, but Strong stuck to his game plan, and it worked out.
The Longhorns raced out to a 31-14 lead in the third quarter and the game looked all but over. Then DeShone Kizer happened. After an offseason battle with Malik Zaire, Kizer won himself the starting job a because of his performance in this game.
Texas was trying to stave off a big comeback, but couldn’t do so as the two teams headed to overtime tied at 37 thanks to some crazy plays (including a blocked extra point returned for two or Notre Dame).
Buechele remained poised and finished with 280 yards and two touchdowns, but it was his backup, Tyrone Swoopes, who saved the day, recording two rushing touchdowns in overtime.
Watch out, college football: Texas is back.
