Team of the Week: Alabama Crimson Tide

This isn’t even remotely close. The Alabama Crimson Tide were by far and away the best team in Week 1 of the 2016 college football season. Facing a strange amount of scrutiny as the No. 1 team in the land, Alabama massacred the USC Trojans at AT&T Stadium in Arlington on Saturday night, 52-6.

Alabama put up 465 yards of total offense on an untamed Trojan defense. Despite losing former defensive coordinator Kirby Smart to the Georgia Bulldogs head coaching position in the offseason, Alabama head coach Nick Saban and new defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt held USC to two field goals and just 194 yards of total offense.

What made this game so incredibly lopsided was Alabama’s offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin’s plan to eviscerate his former employer’s team. Kiffin was fired on the tarmac after an embarrassing USC loss a few years back. Kiffin did recruit many of the players on Clay Helton’s team but didn’t think twice about crushing his former recruits with brilliantly designed offensive play calls.

Of all the teams in the top 10 of the AP Top 25 in Week 1, Alabama was able to flex its muscles more than any of its Playoff contending brethren. Yes, USC will not be ranked after getting destroyed in Arlington by Alabama, but the Crimson Tide deserve to receive every first-place vote in this week’s AP Poll for humiliating the Trojans.
