Play of the Week: Houston Cougars kick six Oklahoma Sooners

The No. 15 Houston Cougars needed a big play to beat the No. 3 Oklahoma Sooners at NRG Stadium on Saturday afternoon. What the college football world got was essentially Kick Six II, as Cougars cornerback Brandon Wilson returned a missed Oklahoma field goal attempt for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Cougars head coach Tom Herman had the senior defensive back lined up on the goal line for when Oklahoma attempted a 54-yard field goal with eight and half minutes in the third quarter. Wilson had to leap at the end line just to come down with the ball.

Wilson had momentarily thought he stepped out of bounds but kept on running all the way to the Sooners’ end zone. Herman was quoted as saying, “I was thinking this was too good to be true, surely there’s a flag somewhere.”

This special teams score put Houston up 26-17 at 8:28 in the third quarter. There was no looking back for the Cougars, as they got their big Week 1 win over a National Semifinalist from the year before. Houston has now won back-to-back games versus teams ranked in the top 10. The Cougars appear to be a real threat to make the College Football Playoff.
