20. Seattle Mariners

Last championship: never

Last winning season: 2014

The Mariners are currently in their 39th year of play, and have yet to see their first World Series. In fact, they currently own the longest consecutive streak in baseball for a team to have never appeared in a Series (the Washington Nationals have split their run of futility between two cities).

And it’s not as if they haven’t had the type of players that could get them over the hump. After all, this is a team that once had Ken Griffey Jr, Alex Rodriguez, Randy Johnson, and Edgar Martinez all on the same team from 1995 through 1998, but still did no better than an ALCS loss to the Cleveland Indians in ’95.

By 2001, Griffey, A-Rod, and the Big Unit were gone, but Ichiro Suzuki had made his descent upon Seattle and made a seismic impact, winning both the AL MVP and Rookie of the Year, while also leading the M’s to a single-season record 116 wins.

Despite this regular season dominance, the Mariners were defeated handily by the New York Yankees in the ALCS for the second consecutive year, failing once again to cash in on their considerable promise.

Fast forward to today, and that 2001 October remains the last time the Mariners made a playoff appearance, finishing fourth place in nine out of 15 season since.
