On September 7th Apple will release the highly anticipated iPhone 7. Design changes to the new model are suggested to affect the 3,5mm headphone jack, to be replaced with the proprietary Lightning jack. The replacement, if true is feared to frustrate many already having invested in expensive headphones. Bydgoszcz, Poland on September 4 2016. (Photo by Jaap Arriens/NurPhoto via Getty Images)

Ready to upgrade to Apple’s iOS 10? Here’s what you need to know.

Apple’s latest mobile operating system, iOS 10, will come with a bevy of new features when it goes public. Since it’s meant to go hand in hand with the new iPhone 7, expect to see it in action during Apple’s keynote speech later today. Here’s what you need to know about upgrading.

The tech giant promises that iOS 10 will be the “biggest release yet.” On its preview page, it lists quite a few modifications. In particular, users can now use Siri in conjunction with certain apps, like Lyft and Square. Moreover, Apple has given Maps an overhaul that allows you to make restaurant reservations or even call an Uber without leaving Maps.

Apple has already opened the public beta of iOS 10. If you sign up with your Apple ID, you can participate, though we recommend backing your device up. Generally, new iterations of iOS drop about a week or so after the keynote address.

However, when iOS 10 goes live, there are two ways to update. Before you try, though, check and make sure your devices are actually compatible. iPhone 5 and later can update. For iPads, iPad mini models 2, 3, and 4 can update. Ditto for 4th generation iPads, and iPad Air or Air 2. The 9.7 and 12.9 inch models of the iPad Pro can also handle iOS 10. Finally, you can upgrade only the 6th-generation iPod touch.

We’ll start with the wireless upgrade. If you get a message saying a software upgrade is available, simply tap “Install Now” to start the process. Otherwise, go to your Settings, tap General, and then Software Update.

If you choose the “Download and Install” option, plug your phone in and wait for the installation. Otherwise, you can select the “Later” option, which will allow you to either install the update overnight or at a later time of your choosing.

Next, let’s take a look at the hardwire upgrade. Make sure you have the latest version of iTunes on your computer and that you’re connected to the Internet. Connect your device to your computer, then select your device. In the Summary section, click Check for Update, then Download and Update.
