3. Philip Rivers

The odds are that this game may get out of control, and in order for San Diego to make a run, they are going to be relying on the pass. Rivers is still as talented as any quarterback in the AFC, and has that never say die attitude that fantasy football owners love. The Chargers may not leave Arrowhead Stadium with a win, but Rivers’ fantasy owners are going to win if they have him in their lineup.

The Chiefs have two young cornerbacks in Phillip Gaines and Marcus Peters, so Rivers is going to go after them early. Sean Smith left Kansas City for fellow AFC West team, Oakland Raiders, so the secondary definitely took a hit in that regard. Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry missed nearly the entire preseason holding out, so he may not be up to game-speed in Week 1.

All of these things favor Rivers, who also should have some added time to throw. He is used to being chased around by Justin Houston and Tamba Hali, but both are expected to either not play, or be limited on Sunday. If Rivers has the time, he is going to pick the Chiefs apart.

Proceeding with caution seems like the smart thing to do, considering Rivers has not thrown a touchdown against the Chiefs since 2014. However, the deck seems to be stacked a bit in his favor, so he could put together big numbers on Sunday. Expect a Chargers loss, but also expect at least 300 yards and a few touchdown passes from #17.
