10. Ohio State Buckeyes

O-H, I-O. Was there any doubt that the Ohio State Buckeyes would not crack the top 10? Ohio State is almost always good and when was the last time the Buckeyes were bad? Try never. In the Midwest, there isn’t a more dominant blue-blood program that Ohio State.

The Buckeyes have a national following as one of the most successful programs in the Big Ten all-time. So many things associated with Buckeye football have transcended into the college football lexicon: Script Ohio, The Horseshoe, scarlet and gray. People actually know what a buckeye is because of this powerhouse football team.

Ohio Stadium is one of the most difficult stadiums to play in college football. Few programs in college football are able to recruit like the Buckeyes do. While they already have a strong crop of talent in-state, top prospects come from all over the country to play for Ohio State.

What really makes Ohio State stand out as one of the best fanbases in college football is its ability to unite all three major metropolises in Ohio. Of course getting the following of the capital city and Ohio State’s home base of Columbus is easy, but there are just as many members of the Buckeye faithful residing in Cincinnati and Cleveland.

Cincinnati and Cleveland may hate each other on fall Sundays, but they are the best of buds with Columbus on fall Saturdays in this football-crazy midwestern state. Football as we know it was created in Ohio. Ohio State is the state’s most iconic team.
