College football’s 15 most passionate and loyal fanbases
By John Buhler
9. Penn State Nittany Lions
Never question the loyalty of the Penn State Nittany Lions’ fanbase. This Power 5 program has a proud, albeit tainted history under legendary head coach Joe Paterno. Penn State has won two National Championships and three Big Ten Championships during the Paterno era in University Park.
Penn State was not a national power until Paterno arrived in 1966. His school’s success on the gridiron has transformed this sleepy college town into a blue-blood in 50 years. No other school in the Power 5 can say that. All other blue-bloods have nearly century-long strangleholds on the sport.
Though the Nittany Lions have undergone immense hardship in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal, I think Penn State will one day re-emerge as a true national power. Pennsylvania has a ton of football talent in-state and the Penn State brand is still as unifying as ever.
Beaver Stadium is a massive football cathedral. It is one of the biggest stadiums on Planet Earth. Penn State may not ever get another legendary coach like Paterno, but its tradition and fanbase makes this a nearly impossible job to turn down for a strong head coaching candidate.
