On Monday, Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton square off in the first Presidential Debate of 2016. It’s guaranteed to be an exciting night. So who’s moderating?

Historically, the presidential debates are the most popular leg of the race. Recently, Donald Trump shocked the world by earning the Republican nomination, but if you know anything about America, then you know the only thing standing between him and the presidency right now is Democrat Hillary Clinton.

But who are these people really and what do they stand for?

Well, the point of the presidential debate is to give Americans a chance to see each candidate answer the same questions without the distraction of other candidates or campaign teams bolstering a platform. Further, it’s organized by the Commission on Presidential Debates, which is staffed by individuals from both parties. In the middle of all this is the moderator, who serves to delegate time and questions to each candidate.

For the first debate, our moderator will be Lester Holt.

Holt is an anchor from NBC Nightly News and Dateline NBC.

For 90 minutes, Holt will referee six 15-minute segments that cover three different topics. As the moderator, it’s Holt’s responsibility to select each topic.

Thus, he’s chosen:

  • America’s Direction
  • Achieving Prosperity
  • Securing America

Each topic seems pretty straightforward and simple enough for the first presidential debate. However, nothing’s simple in the world of politics and there’s no telling what tangent either candidate will go off on.

But, again, it’s Lester Holt’s job to keep the digressions to a minimum. He’s registered as a Republican and will most likely keep things as fair as possible. However, it seems like the media struggles to navigate the tides between these two particular candidates.
