First look inside the new Guardians of the Galaxy-Mission: Breakout ride
Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is scheduled to check out for the last time in January, but we’re already getting a look at the Guardians of the Galaxy-Mission: Breakout ride set to replace it.
With only a few more months before the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is set to shutter its doors for good, there are already signs of changes taking place within the iconic Hollywood Tower Hotel edifice.
The Disney Imagineers have put together a look at what fans can expect in the new Guardians of the Galaxy-Mission: Breakout ride set to replace the Tower of Terror. The ride takes place in a massive structure housing the Collector’s unique collection of rare items. The queue takes guests through some of the museum cases seen in the movies as they await the ride. Outside the building, the exterior will look like a power plant or factor, with exposed pipes and wiring.
While there’s no question the ride will be amazing (it is Disney, after all), there is the matter of how this ride will fit into the Hollywood Studios section of DCA. The Tower of Terror is the most visible structure in the park, and changing it so dramatically will alter the DCA skyline somewhat. All of this is expected to tie into the eventual creation of a Marvel Land in that area; there is a sizeable backstage area behind the Tower of Terror that is ripe for development and it’s widely known that the plan is to create an E-ticket Marvel ride in that space.
Last week the Hollywood Tower Hotel sign was removed from the building in a move that surprised many fans that frequent the park. Halloween celebrations are in full swing at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, and there Tower of Terror plays a vital role in those celebrations with the new Late Check Out feature. Every evening after the sun goes down, the lights turn off inside the Tower of Terror and you go through the entire ride experience in pure darkness. It has been so popular that lines are insane and Fast Passes aren’t available for the nighttime experience, congesting the ride even more.

Adding to that congestion is the report that annual refurbishment is taking place within the ride as we speak. Mice Chat reports that the three ride shafts will alternately be closed to allow for now infrastructure to be installed ahead of the transformation. Closing one of the elevator shafts will only cause longer lines and wait times.
The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror is scheduled to close January 2, 2017 and the new Guardians of the Galaxy Mission: Breakout ride is set to open in the spring of 2017.
