4. Pac-12

As usual, the middle and lower tiers of the Pac-12 are in absolute chaos right now. Meanwhile the gap at the top continues to grow.

Fresh off of a destruction of Stanford, No. 4 Washington snapped a 12-game losing streak to archrival Oregon with a 70-21 beatdown at Autzen Stadium. Jake Browning accounted for eight total touchdowns and is quickly gaining some ground on Lamar Jackson in the Heisman race.

It’s hard to tell who exactly is the second best team in the conference at this point. No. 21 Utah can beat anybody at Rice-Eccles, Washington State had little trouble with Stanford and appears to have recovered from a season-opening FCS loss once again, and USC is suddenly playing more up to its talent level.

After that group of teams, things fall off quickly. The South division is wide open following Colorado’s first conference loss against the Trojans, while UCLA also suffered a lackluster loss against Arizona State. Oregon has fallen off a cliff, and California’s unpredictable season continued with an overtime loss to hapless Oregon State.

There’s still some depth here, but the second through fifth best Pac 12 teams are not nearly as good as in previous years. As the Huskies played a cupcake nonconference schedule, one loss would likely end any playoff hopes.
