Alaska: Phil Sarboe – Washington State Cougars

Alaska isn’t known for producing a lot of football players. In fact, only nine players born in the Last Frontier have taken their talents from the NCAA to the NFL. Only one of them played quarterback, but he played the position pretty well back in his days at Washington State.

Phil Sarboe was born in Fairbanks, Alaska and raised in Tacoma, Washington. He was a three-sport star for the Washington State Cougars from 1931 to 1933. Sarboe attended the school on a basketball scholarship and was also a star shortstop in baseball. However, his greatest successes came on the gridiron.

Sarboe played multiple positions for the Cougars, including quarterback. Phil was selected to several All-Coast teams and was an All-American honorable mention. He also starred in the 1934 East-West Shrine Game. Sarboe went on to play in the NFL for the Boston Redskins, Chicago Cardinals and Brooklyn Dodgers. He even led the NFL in passing attempts and yardage in 1935.

The pickings were slim, but the king of Alaskan college football quarterbacks is still Phil Sarboe. Only time will tell when the next great college quarterback from Alaska will emerge. Perhaps he’s being born right now.
