New Mexico: Colt McCoy – Texas Longhorns
When it comes to college quarterbacks born in New Mexico, all pale in comparison to former Texas Longhorn Colt McCoy. His career at Texas was four years of excellence that will be hard for anyone born in the Land of Enchantment to match.
McCoy was born in Hobbs, New Mexico and attended Jim Ned High School in Tuscola, Texas. He finished his high school career as the fourth greatest passer in Texas high school history. He would keep his talents in-state as he decided to play quarterback for Mack Brown and the University of Texas.
Colt’s time in Austin was a great ride, as he was the starting quarterback for the Longhorns from 2006 to 2009. His achievements over his first three seasons include being named the 2006 National Freshman of the Year and the 2008 Heisman Trophy runner-up to Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford. He was a Heisman finalist again in 2009 and won numerous awards, including the Maxwell, Walter Camp and Johnny Unitas awards. McCoy was also the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year.
Although McCoy is currently only a backup for the Washington Redskins, his college career in Texas was outstanding. He is easily the best college quarterback born in New Mexico.
