Oregon: Neil Lomax – Portland State Vikings

Oregon is the birthplace of a few special college quarterbacks. Oregon’s Joey Harrington and Oregon State’s Derek Anderson are a couple of signal-callers that come to mind. However, former NFL Pro Bowler Neil Lomax is the best representative of top college passers from the Beaver State.

Lomax had an interesting journey to stardom at Portland State University. He went from being a fifth-string freshman quarterback to an emergency starter to an NCAA superstar. By the time his collegiate career was done, Neil held 90 NCAA records, including most touchdowns in one quarter, with seven. He also finished seventh in the 1980 Heisman Trophy voting and his efforts eventually got him inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Neil went on to play in the NFL for the then-St. Louis Cardinals, where he made it to the Pro Bowl twice. Unfortunately, he had an up and down career and couldn’t match his college heroics. Despite the Heisman Trophy run by Harrington in 2001, Neil Lomax is still the best college quarterback born in Oregon.
