South Carolina: Woody Dantzler – Clemson Tigers

South Carolina has produced many elite college football players. Alshon Jeffery, Jadeveon Clowney, Carlos Dunlap, A.J. Green and DeAndre Hopkins are just a few that come to mind. Unfortunately, there’s a bit of a shortage when it comes to the quarterback position. One can argue for Coastal Carolina’s Tyler Thigpen due to his dominance of their record book, but Clemson’s Woody Dantzler accomplished more and against better competition.

Dantzler was born in Orangeburg, South Carolina and attended Wilkinson High School. He went on to play for the Clemson Tigers from 1997 to 2000 and achieved great success. His best season was in 2000 when he led the Tigers to a 9-3 record. He also became the first player in NCAA history to pass for more than 2,000 yards and rush for more than 1,000 yards in a single season. Dantzler’s season had him as a Heisman Trophy candidate, but he never became a finalist. He currently holds 53 Clemson football records and was inducted into the school Hall of Fame in 2007.

Although the pinnacle of his pro career came in 2006, when he won an Arena Football League championship with the Chicago Rush, Woody left an indelible mark on the Clemson program. There has been no signal-caller born in South Carolina that has achieved more in college than he has.
