2. Scott Arfield scores Burnley’s first ever Premier League injury time winner
Manager Sean Dyche has to be ecstatic with the way Scott Arfield applied himself to Saturday’s game against Everton. If scoring the club’s first ever Premier League injury time winner isn’t enough, Arfield also had a hand in Burnley’s first goal. Arfield collected the ball just beyond half, beat a player and made a surging run toward Everton’s goal. Maarten Stekelenburg mishandled Arfield’s scuffed shot, the rebound falling kindly to Sam Vokes who was more than happy to oblige.
The moment that the Burnley faithful will forever remember came deep in stoppage time, with the match perfectly poised at one apiece. Johann Berg Gudmundsson’s long-range effort rattled the crossbar, and the rebound fell favorably to Arfield.
He didn’t hit his half-volley as sweetly as he would have liked, but that won’t matter in the least to the 27-year-old Canadian midfielder. The shot handcuffed Stekelenburg and kept him rooted to the ground. Arfield’s delight was matched only by that of the Burnley supporters. It’s a goal that will go down in Burnley folklore and one that helped the team out of the relegation zone.
