College Football: Predicting every undefeated teams first loss
By Carly Regehr
5. Michigan Wolverines
W-L Record: 7-0
Remaining Schedule: at Michigan Sate., Maryland, at Iowa, Indiana, at Ohio State
They will fall victim to…
Ohio State on Nov. 26
This year’s Ohio St.-Michigan game will be special not only because Michigan’s ranked in front of Ohio State for the first time in forever, but it marks the 100th time they’ve met. The “Century Game” between these two will be more heated than ever. The series is practically knotted up and both Urban Meyer and Jim Harbaugh are psyched to see each other for the second time. On Nov. 26, Michigan will have a chance to win for their campus at home. But those pesky Buckeyes stand in the way.
There are two elephants in the room. One, Michigan’s dismantling of Rutgers was a very bold statement. Two, Ohio St. might be a bit discouraged after losing to Penn St. on the road. Either way, you cut it, neither of those results will matter once the college football season reaches its last week of action.
You could go on and on about how unique and exciting Nov. 25 will be. It’ll be like Christmas is arriving a month early. Truth be told, it won’t feel like that for Michigan fans when they come into town.
Since 2004, Michigan is 1-14 vs. Ohio St. Yes, Michigan has undergone a huge reconstructive surgery. They’re now one of the top recruiting schools in the nation. They’re also No. 2 in the latest AP Poll. It’s a glorious time to be wearing the maize and blue. But it won’t matter on Nov. 25.
Ohio State still has the upper hand. QB J.T. Barrett (1,452 yards, 17 TD, 4 INT; 460 rush yards, 6 TD) and RB Curtis Samuel (527 yards, 4 TD; 471 rec. yards, 3 TD) are committing an act of Atlas and stowing the Buckeyes offense on their shoulders. On defense, Malik Hooker (29 tackles, 4 INT) and Marshon Lattimore (24 tackles, 3 INT) are doing work themselves.
The Buckeyes also made some bold statements of their own against Oklahoma and Wisconsin, both of which were away games. And as any college football fan knows, Norman and Madison aren’t very hospitable to out-of-town teams. Those stances alone should warm up Columbus and serve as momentum.
Plus, Ohio St. would be an embarrassment if they lost at home to their long-time chum.
