4. West Virginia could easily climb the College Football Playoff Rankings

There is arguably more parity in college football than there has ever been. It has become more and more difficult to beat quality teams week in and week out and to stay perfect over the course of an entire regular season. In each of the first two season of the College Football Playoff, only one Power Five team has made it through the regular season without a loss. As evidenced by Ohio State’s recent loss to Penn State, no win is guaranteed at this level. Any Power Five football program that goes undefeated will make the four team playoff.

Alabama, Michigan, Clemson and Washington are all undefeated and sit atop Power Five conferences. The playoff picture is fairly clear and West Virginia is not currently a part of it. But anything can happen between now and the time the playoff participants are chosen. Alabama has to play in Death Valley, and is yet to play a surging Auburn squad. Michigan still has to play Ohio State in Columbus and Clemson is traveling to Tallahassee this weekend to play Florida State. Washington closes Pac 12 play against a string of quality teams. In the event any of these schools do indeed remain undefeated, they all have to play conference championship games. In all likelihood, at least one of these teams will drop a game and create an opening for West Virginia.
