5 greatest comebacks in recent MLB postseason history
2. 2011 World Series – St. Louis Cardinals vs. Texas Rangers
The 2011 World Series probably should have had the Texas Rangers win it all. They were arguably the best team in the league during the season and maneuvered their way to the end of the postseason.
On the other hand, there were the St. Louis Cardinals, who had to claw back from a double-digit amount of games to get into the Wild Card and beat an all-time great regular season team in the Philadelphia Phillies. So, their comeback story had seemingly already been written and placed into the record books, especially when the Rangers were one out away from winning the World Series and David Free up to bat.
Well, it turns out the Cardinals third baseman would have one of the greatest postseason hits of all time. First, it came with his go-ahead triple in the 9th inning after being down to his last strike. Who couldn’t remember Rangers outfielder Nelson Cruz leaping and missing the ball over his head? Then, in the 11th inning, Freese stepped up to the plate again and hit a historic walk-off home run to force a Game 7. It marked one of the most impactful postseason performances in MLB history to continue to propel the Cardinals’ improbable late-season heroics. They would go on to win Game 7 and the World Series.
Few series have had the heroics and dramatics that the 2011 Fall Classic produced, making the Cardinals’ performance one of the best ever.
