College Football Week 9: Top performers of the week
By Brad Weiss
Saquon Barkley is quietly putting together a Heisman Trophy-worthy season for Penn State this season, and on Saturday, he put on a show against Purdue. The true sophomore ran for a career-high 207 yards against the Boilermakers, scoring two touchdowns in the Nittany Lions 62-24 thrashing. Barkley also led the team with 70 yards receiving, as he continues to put himself on the map.
Last season, Barkley was one of the few bright spots on the Penn State roster, rushing for over 1,000 yards as a true freshman. Barkley scored seven touchdowns in his first season on campus, but he has eclipsed that mark already this season. His 200-yard effort was his second of that variety in the past few weeks, with a 99-yard effort against No. 2 Ohio State sandwiched in between.
Since being blown out by Michigan back in September, the Nittany Lions have run off four straight victories. There was no hangover from their huge win against Ohio State last week, as their 62 points were a season-high. In his past two games, Barkley has averaged over 10 yards per carry, rushing for over 300 yards on only 30 carries.
