Game 7 of the 2016 World Series was delayed due to rain, but can they actually reschedule this classic between the Cubs and Indians?

Through nine innings, Game 7 of the 2016 World Series between the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians was an absolute classic. The Indians were able to make a huge eighth-inning comeback with a Rajai Davis game-tying home run. From there, the dicey situations arose, but both teams emerged. Thus, it was time for extra innings—or so fans thought.

After Aroldis Chapman somehow made it out of the ninth inning despite looking gassed, the umpires ruled that they needed to delay the game and suspend play. Rain started in the later innings, but they played on. However, the officials got word that there was about to be a bigger, heavier cell of rain coming in and elected to stop it.

Given that the game had been so crazy and with such stakes on the line for both teams, rain was the last thing anyone wanted at Progressive Field. Thus, everyone is rightfully asking the question: can World Series Game 7 be rescheduled if this continues? Sort of.

As instituted following Game 5 of the 2008 World Series, any postseason game that is suspended due to rain will resume right where the game left off the next day. Thus, they would pick up with extra innings baseball on Thursday night with Game 7 in 2016. That’s not what anyone wants, but those are the rules.

Here’s to hoping that it doesn’t come to this. Both cities and the fans of these teams deserve to have a winner on Wednesday night.
