4. Michigan has an excellent shot at the BCS title

Though winning the BCS title is not a prerequisite for taking home the Heisman Trophy, if definitely doesn’t hurt your chances to be in contention.

There have been many cases where a non-champion has won the coveted hardware, but there have also been loads of talented players who were dropped from the race due to multiple loses.

You could be a lock for first overall pick in the upcoming draft and nowhere near a finalist throughout the season if the team you play for is surging toward a losing season. If you’re in title contention you get more air time, and a Heisman Trophy winner must be worthy of the spotlight. You don’t have to be undefeated, but if you don’t play for a winner, you won’t be considered one either.

The other determining factor is momentum, it must be at the right time as well. In this race, it’s not how you start, it’s how you finish.

The argument here is valid for one reason above all. If a player is deserving of the Heisman, shouldn’t he be leading his team toward the BCS Championship?
