Stock Down: Malik McDowell, DT, Michigan State

Spartans defensive tackle Malik McDowell is expected to miss this weekends game against Ohio State with a suspected ankle injury. Michigan State has not listed McDowell on the depth chart all week, and the specific injury has not been disclosed.

Without playing beside Shilique Calhoun, who was drafted by the Raiders in 2016 and has eight tackles this season, McDowell has flourished inside. He’s a very athletic kid who possesses good bend, strength, and quickness. He can fill out his 6-foot-4, 247-pound frame, something NFL coaches and trainers will focus on intensely.

McDowell has stated that he will only declare for the NFL if he believes he will be a top-three pick, saying “top 10 ain’t good enough for me.”

Some may love the competitiveness, while others will find that it rubs them the wrong way.

Depending on what teams are drafting at the top of the 2017 NFL Draft, McDowell may find himself disappointed should he declare. San Francisco, Cleveland, Jacksonville and Chicago will be vying for a top-three pick, and defensive tackle may not be high on their list.

Jacksonville could possibly look to replace Sen’Derrick Marks inside and play McDowell next to Malik Jackson. There are so many issues for the Jaguars to fill however, and they could wait and take the best player available for them on draft day.
