Heisman Performance of the Week: Alabama Crimson Tide QB Jalen Hurts

For the second consecutive week, many of the top 2016 Heisman Trophy contenders had a down Saturday. Across the board, many of the Heisman hopefuls didn’t stuff the stat sheet. Though the Alabama Crimson Tide played a cupcake in the Chattanooga Mocs, quarterback Jalen Hurts further solidified his 2016 Heisman candidacy.

The true freshman signal caller for Alabama completed 15 of 21 passes for 136 yards and three passing touchdowns. On the ground, Hurts would have 16 carries for 68 yards. Saturday’s performance against Chattanooga wasn’t as signature as Hurts’ performances against either the LSU Tigers or the Mississippi State Bulldogs, but he’s forced his way to New York City in a few weeks.

Alabama should finish the 2016 regular season at a perfect 12-0 should the Crimson Tide win the Iron Bowl over the Auburn Tigers. Regardless of that game’s outcome, Alabama is going to the 2016 SEC Championship. Should Alabama beat Florida in Atlanta on December 3rd, the Crimson Tide will earn its third straight trip to the College Football Playoff.

Unless Hurts plays absolutely horrendous against Auburn in the Iron Bowl, one can argue that he has punched his ticket to be the SEC’s representative at the 2016 Heisman Trophy ceremony. Louisville’s Jackson should still win the Heisman, but Hurts should be in the room for the presentation.
