1) Strike a Heisman pose

Not all great players are candidates for the Heisman, but all Heisman candidates are great players.

To win the trophy you must be a great player, but that’s only the half of it. You also must have a strong push from a great supporter, and you must brand yourself as a Heisman Trophy winner.

Desmond Howard played many positions for the Michigan Wolverines. But most of all, every time he took the field he was a clutch performer. In 1991, Howard was up for the Heisman Trophy. He had impressed all year long and was considered a shoo-in for the trophy.

In the second half with a 24-3 lead over Ohio State in 1991, Howard continued to amaze.

Michigan’s defensive unit had forced yet another punt. With the game already out of reach, Howard took the ball at the 7-yard line and never looked back as he marched 93 yards for the touchdown. Once he hit the end zone he struck his best Heisman pose. Instant branding.

He not only put the game further out of reach, but he also capped off an amazing season with a much-needed Heisman moment.
