How not to jinx the Memphis Grizzlies

Recording an NBA podcast a night before a packed slate of 13 games can be fraught with problems, such as analysis or jokes being immediately outdated. You also run the real risk of excessively praising a team on a hot streak, only for them to go out and stub their toe before anyone listens to the episode. Luckily, we at Fastbreak Breakfast are experts* and have avoided this pitfall.

We talked a good deal about the surprisingly resurgent (surgent?) Memphis Grizzlies, who also happen to be the favorite team of two-thirds of the show. Knowing they had a sneaky tough date with Joel Embiid and the Philadelphia 76ers, we acknowledged our chances of cursing the team’s winning streak were high. Thus, we employed counter-measures to successfully reverse jinx them. We downplayed their chances in the game and then uploaded the episode with a title acknowledging the curse. You are welcome, Grizz Nation. And our sympathies, Process-Trusters.

More of the cornucopia of topics that we successfully did not jinx:

  • The continuing triumphant return of Jrue Holiday.
  • Jamal Murray (RIP #JacqueWatch) beginning to find his groove.
  • Vince Carter continuing to defy Father Time by improbably having his best season since he was on the Dallas Mavericks.
  • The Sacramento Kings mercifully ending the two center starting lineup, immediately improving their rotations. They decided that approximately 800 games of Demarcus Cousins and Kosta Koufos together was a large enough sample size for them to finally give up the twin towers look.
  • The Golden State Warriors showing signs of becoming a world-crushing juggernaut .
