Lucifer returns this week with season 3 episode 10,“Quid Pro Ho.” Let’s break down the episode in our recap.

We begin this week where we left off after last week’s episode. Chloe leaves the restaurant after Lucifer stands her up. Charlotte is waiting to blow up the car, but Amenadiel stops her when Chloe pauses to get her keys from the valet. He tells his mother that they need Lucifer to make the decision to return home on his own. He can’t allow her to kill Chloe. Charlotte demonstrates her power by lifting Amenadiel off the ground, but this doesn’t stop him. He says that killing Chloe will make Lucifer hunt until he finds her killer. Amenadiel reminds her that he killed Uriel to save Chloe. Chloe drives off while Charlotte is distracted. Charlotte calls it anticlimactic.

In therapy, Dr. Martin correctly guesses that Lucifer didn’t go to dinner with Chloe. She says he’s lying to himself about his feelings for her.  This makes Lucifer stop for a moment to consider her words.

Lucifer arrives at Chloe’s house to apologize and she says not to bother her on this of all days. Chloe’s mom, Penelope, says it’s very sweet of him to support them. It’s the first day of the murder trial for the man who killed her father. He says he’s there to support them like “an emotional jock strap there to protect the Decker family jewels.”

Ella suspects that Dan got laid with the way he’s acting. Dan says he’s out of his league. She’s “goddess like.” Ella says that someone sent him a mystery package and maybe it’s from her. They open it, and inside is the head of the prosecution’s key witness.

In court Lucifer says that Penelope is very poised. She says she’s been there before. Chloe rushes in with news of the murder. It’s the worst thing that can happen, she says. However, she doesn’t realize that Charlotte is walking into the courtroom as Perry’s defense attorney. “What are you up to now, mother?” Lucifer growls.

When the judge arrives, she asks if they want to dismiss the trial. The defense doesn’t think that they need to dismiss it. The prosecution says their case is “unshakeable” so the judge says they’ll continue after lunch. Outside, Lucifer confronts his mother and she says that she needed a way to open Lucifer’s eyes about Chloe. He killed her son for Chloe. She doesn’t think Chloe cares about Lucifer the way Lucifer cares about her. He wants to know what plan she’s concocting. She reveals she was going to kill Chloe, and this triggers Lucifer. Charlotte vows not to hurt anyone. Chloe sees this and says she hopes it won’t impact the trial; the last time she saw Lucifer and Charlotte it looked like they had been sleeping together.

At the station, Dan is stunned to learn that Charlotte is defending Perry. Ella says that the man’s tongue was cut out to send a message about loose lips. His head was severed by a meat cutter, and there’s only one place where that type of meat can be found.

Chloe returns to the courthouse and Lucifer promises to protect her from the “Quid Pro Ho.” The prosecutor calls him over and says he’s ready. Lucifer takes the stand and pledges to tell the truth, “so help me Dad.”

The prosecutor asks Lucifer about being there at the crime scene. Lucifer gets up and asks for a scarf. He reenacts the entire scene for the jury, and he has the judge and jury eating out of the palm of his hand.

Dan asks Ella if she’s ever felt like she’s being used. Ella suspects that it’s possible, considering his girlfriend is defending the man who killed his ex-wife’s father. Dan never told Ella who he was dating, but she saw the signs and nailed it all. Dan thinks he’s been set up. They talk to the butcher, who says that someone comes in and uses their equipment after hours. He’s an Asian man with a scar on his neck.

Lucifer finishes his testimony by telling the rapt courtroom that Detective Decker is “truly good” and his message resonates with her. She is clearly touched that he’s doing all of this for her. When Charlotte ha a turn at questioning him, she says she has no questions for him.

Maze catches Amenadiel sneaking around Chloe’s car at their apartment. He says he’s there because he can’t stop thinking about her, and they share a kiss. She pulls the detonator out of his pocket and ignites Amenadiel’s car, telling Amenadiel that he can tell his mother that no one is hurting Chloe on her watch. She walks away as a burning tire rolls by.

The trial continues with Dan’s testimony. He talks about how the prison Perry ran was corrupt, and it’s the same prison Chloe’s father was investigating. Charlotte calls Lucifer back and asks about the officer who arrived first on the scene. Lucifer has no choice but to tell the truth. Later, Chloe tells Lucifer that clearly his relationship with Charlotte has given her information about this trial. She’s furious. Dan finds Charlotte and asks how she can do this to him. He’s the one who shared information with her. She says he gladly shared the intel with her, and she’ll do it again.

Dr. Martin meets with Amenadiel who says that he’s upset because Maze blew up his car. She knows that he cares about Maze and she says that he needs to apologize immediately.

Maze wants to know how Lucifer can be so upset that Chloe is blaming him for what happened at the trial. She’s furious at Amenadiel for lying and helping Charlotte. Dan arrives, and Lucifer hopes that he has a lead to help them prove what they’re trying to say about Perry without having their witness. He says the man who chopped off the witness’s head was part of a Chinese syndicate that has been feuding with the Russians. The trio travels to the Chinese cultural center, where Maze uses every double entendre in the book to get Dan to admit that he slept with Charlotte. When Lucifer finds out, he rushes Dan and they go through the wall. A dozen armed men point their guns at them.

Lucifer, who speaks Chinese, asks who is in charge. It’s a woman, and she agrees to hand over the man who killed the witness if they fight Kang. Kang is a huge guy, and Maze is up for the challenge. Soon she’s sending him outside. Lucifer narrates the fight for Dan, and when Maze kicks his butt Lucifer is given the information to find the killer.

Chloe tells her mother that she’s worried that she might be the reason that the case is lost. Charlotte approaches and Penelope asks if she’s a mother. “Shame on you,” she sneers before walking away. Charlotte is momentarily stunned, then she says she needs to talk to Chloe.

Dan and Lucifer arrive in Chinatown and find two bodies. One is the headless witness, and the other is the man who killed him. They’re both dead.

Charlotte tells Chloe that they’re losing without more proof. She says she’s got the case in the bag, and she tries to convince Chloe to testify against Lucifer and call him a liar to hurt him. If she does that, she’ll get her client to plead guilty.

Chloe takes the stand and Charlotte questions her about Lucifer’s background. Charlotte sputters when Chloe says his background running Hell makes him a great detective. She defies Charlotte and says Lucifer isn’t a liar. She says she was the one who arrived first on the team. The prosecution tries to strike the testimony from the record, but it doesn’t work. Perry is set free.

Amenadiel arrives with flowers for Maze and finds Penelope crying outside. She wonders if he got into a fight because her husband gave her flowers after an argument. She thought things happened for a reason, and he responds that it’s how you respond that makes a difference. Amenadiel pauses when he thinks he recognizes Penelope. Something has his attention. He excuses himself and hurries off.

Perry leaves the strip club and greets the hookers outside. Dan steps out of the shadows and confronts him. He says the Russians are upset with him because they don’t like when one of their own is taken out without permission. As he walks away, the Russians pull up. Dan gets into Maze’s car and she says she’s impressed. “Drive,” he says.

Charlotte comes back to the office and finds Amenadiel at her house. He says she’s right, and that she’s nothing like their father. 35 years ago his father asked him to bless a couple to help them have a baby. That miracle child, he says, is Chloe. She was placed intentionally in Lucifer’s path. And Amenadiel was a pawn.

Lucifer runs into Chloe as she arrives at his apartment. He was on his way to bring her dinner. It’s wine and fries but she doesn’t care. They lean close and Lucifer smiles when he realizes they’re about to kiss.
