AFC. West. San Diego Chargers. 1. player. 13.

Regardless of where they are playing in Southern California, the Chargers feel like the best place for Mayfield to land as a quarterback prospect. The Chargers have several young dynamic players and two certain Hall of Famers in quarterback Philip Rivers and tight end Antonio Gates.

San Diego’s stadium situation is not good, but this football team could pop in the next couple of years. It really depends on if Rivers is willing to relocate his always-growing family up the road to Los Angeles. Rivers is in his mid-30s but has a few more years left in the tank for the off-chance that the Chargers will contend for a Super Bowl.

The California climate, a young team and a franchise probably on the move seems like a good entry point for Mayfield. Assuming San Diego doesn’t fall off a cliff in December, the Chargers have two solid offensive-minded coaches in head coach Mike McCoy and offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt to bring Mayfield along.

Outside of Rivers, it’s just Kellen Clemens with the Chargers. This means more potential snaps for Mayfield to develop as a passer. Like New Orleans, the Chargers have played too well to be realistically picking in the top five of the 2017 NFL Draft to land a future franchise quarterback. Who really knows where the Chargers will be picking in the first round of the 2018 NFL Draft?

Mayfield could potentially become what the Chargers may have had if they didn’t let Brees go in favor of Rivers. Obviously, San Diego doesn’t regret it because Rivers is an all-time great quarterback. However, the Chargers do need to find a long-term replacement for Rivers in the coming years. Could a diamond in the rough prospect like Mayfield be the next guy in the Chargers organization?
