Breaking down the Chicago White Sox prospect haul
6. Luis Alexander Basabe, OF
The White Sox could have had elite outfield prospect Victor Robles from the Nationals in their initial proposal for Sale but went with the Red Sox offer due to the potential of Moncada. With Eaton on the move, the Sox do need a center fielder of the future, and they may have one in Basabe.
The 19-year-old, who was a top-10 prospect in the Boston organization, just completed his first full-length minor-league season and slashed .264/.328/.452 with 12 home runs, 53 RBIs, and 25 steals. Basabe made stops at Low-A and High-A, where he was roughly two-and-a-half years younger than the rest of the league. He is still very raw but has the range to play center field.
Basabe will need to improve his contact rate as he moves up the system. He struck out 119 times in 425 official at-bats, which is a significant rate for a speed-oriented type of player. On more positive note, he did draw 41 walks. Even if Basabe is not a star in the big leagues, he could profile as a fourth outfielder with good speed or defense off the bench. He has potential to pack plenty more muscle onto his 6’0″, 160-pound frame, which could lead to even more power. Basabe is still a few years away from having an impact at the MLB level but is a good high-potential prospect in this trade for the Red Sox.
