Maryland happens to be one of those programs with an impressive history, but a forgettable present. Hiring former Michigan defensive coordinator D.J. Durkin was one of the best moves this program could have made for the future as he’s had an immediate impact, leading the Terrapins to a bowl game in 2016.

Prior to Durkin, the Terrapins had made nine bowl games since 2000 and 26  in school history. He is starting to take advantage of the local East Coast talent at the prep level and he’s recruiting like he knows how to win Big Ten titles already.

The last time the Terrapins won a conference title was in 2001 when they were still in the ACC and before that it was 1985. The long droughts between conference championships are a big reason why this football program is No. 35 on the list and not much higher.

When you speak about a storied past, though, the Terrapins have just that. They have won 11 conference titles, have finished the regular season undefeated five times and have one national title back in 1953.

The Terrapins are 11-13-2 all-time in bowl games and they have also had 12 consensus All-Americans and 16 first-round NFL draft picks. The most impressive stat might be that they have the third-most ACC titles ever, nine, behind Clemson and Florida State.
