Bryce Harper might end up being baseball’s first $500 million man, but that’ll likely be the second best day of his life.
Washington Nationals superstar outfielder Bryce Harper is a rich man. He might not have the massive contract that he desires, one that could be the first in American sports to exceed $500 million, rather he’s rich with love.
Harper reportedly married longtime girlfriend Kayla Varner this weekend in a Mormon ceremony held in San Diego. The duo have been dating since they were in high school together, but didn’t tie the knot until this past weekend. They were on track to get hitched back in 2015 but called off their plans.
Whatever caused the duo to call off their wedding plans the first time around didn’t stop them from finally sealing the deal. In fact, the failed initial marriage plans paved the way for some wedding party guests to use the hashtag #TheSequel while captioning photos.

Nationals fans are likely hoping this isn’t the only marriage Harper ends up getting himself attached to. Off the field he’s a taken man, but on the diamond there is a lot of speculation about how much he’ll command when his contract runs out in after 2018 season. His contract is technically up but he’s eligible for salary arbitration both this year and next. He’s scheduled to make $9.3 million this year but he’s hoping to get a contract as high as $400 million in the near future.
Reports this month speculated that the Nationals balked at the idea of giving Harper a deal worth $400 million over the next 10-years. That’s a long-term relationship that fans will want the team to commit to but just like an actual marriage, it’s going to take some serious time to consider what the future will look like.
For now, Harper and his new wife will likely be focused on their life away from baseball as they continue their journey in life together.
