Virginia is back doing the same ole Virginia things

The Cavaliers are currently 10-1 and ranked as the third best team in the country, according to KenPom, all while playing in the same way that college basketball fans have grown accustomed to. Virginia’s pack line defense ranks second in adjusted efficiency while it forces opponents into lengthy possessions and tough 3-point shots. Meanwhile, the Cavaliers’ offense continues to play a plodding, but efficient pace.

The poster boy for Virginia’s efficient attack is guard Kyle Guy, a four-star freshman out of Indianapolis. It is Guy — not Lonzo Ball, Malik Monk or any other highly-touted freshman — who leads the country with a 148.0 offensive rating. The 6-foot-3 guard is averaging a team-leading 21.3 points per 40 minutes and a ridiculous 72.5 percent true shooting percentage all while taking 24.0 percent of his team’s shots while he’s been on the floor. He has also been a 3-point sniper, converting 18 of his 30 attempts (60.0 percent).

Guy is averaging just 17.5 minutes per game, but it might be tough to find more time on the court for him this season. The Cavaliers rely heavily on point guard London Perrantes to lead the offense and Darius Thompson gives them a secondary creator and solid perimeter defender. Still, Guy is the perfect representation of Virginia doing the same ole Virginia things.
