This pick comes to the Denver Nuggets via the Memphis Grizzlies. After making three first round selections last year, the Nuggets are in line to have a pair this time around. It’s not hard to imagine them trading one of them, but if they keep the pick, they can snag whatever best prospect is available.
Right now, that’s Syracuse’s Tyler Lydon. The attraction to the 6-foot-8 combo forward begins with two career statistics. In two seasons with the Orange, Lydon has made 41.5 percent of his 3-point attempts and blocked 2.1 shots per 40 minutes. Those 3-and-D credentials are difficult to find among players who spend most of their time at the power forward spot. Lydon’s 3-point shooting appears to be a legitimate weapon. He’s attempted 4.5 triples per 40 minutes and is shooting 76.6 percent from the foul line for his career.
His block numbers are a bit more questionable given that Syracuse plays a zone defense that gives Lydon plenty of time around the rim. Still, there’s no doubt that he’s got good timing and should at least provide some level of rim protection at the next level, although not as a primary option. The 20-year old has also flashed some potential moving laterally along the perimeter in the Orange’s zone that gives hope he won’t be exploited defensively in the NBA.
