NBC’s Friday night lineup will get a little more magical tonight with the premiere of Emerald City, but when and where can you watch?

Now that we’ve made it to January and have neared the end of the winter TV hiatus, it’s time for some new TV shows to premiere. Among them is NBC’s Emerald City, which bills itself as a new take on The Wizard of Oz.

To use what we sense is going to be a very common joke in the next few days, we’re not in Kansas anymore with this one. Check out the trailer below:

There’s a lot to deal with here.

It appears that the Scarecrow analogue and Dorothy will develop some feelings for each other, but since he’s a real boy instead of just an animated scarecrow, it seems slightly less weird. Additionally, Dorothy is not a young woman in a gingham dress with a terrier — she has jeans and a bigger dog this time. She doesn’t even bother to drop a house on the Wicked Witch. Instead, we’ll have to settle for a car getting transported to Oz instead. Finally, the Munchkins have gotten an … upgrade, for a certain definition of the term. We don’t even want to know who represents the Lollipop Guild.

TVGuide has the synopses for the two episodes, but we’ll keep it just to the premiere episode, “The Beast Forever”:

"A tornado occurs while Dorothy searches for her mother, and the storm transports Dorothy to a mystical land where a powerful ruler has outlawed magic in the series premiere of this dark, modern reimagining of “The Wizard of Oz.”"

In other words, it’s going to be a very wild ride. Strap yourselves in for this two-hour premiere.
