Roberto Luongo passes Terry Sawchuk into fifth place on career wins list
Roberto Luongo passed Terry Sawchuk and is now fifth on the career wins list.
The career wins list for goaltenders consists of a lot of great goalies. With 448 wins, Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo has passed former Chicago Blackhawks legend Terry Sawchuk on the career wins list. He is now fifth on the career wins list and just seven wins behind passing Curtis Joseph (454) for fourth place.
Luongo was originally drafted by the New York Islanders. Traded to the Florida Panthers early in his career, he spent five seasons with them before a trade to the Vancouver Canucks. Luongo is best known for his time with Vancouver. He led the Canucks to the 2010-11 Stanley Cup Finals. Luongo is Vancouver’s career leader in wins (252) and shutouts (38). His 2.38 GAA with the Canucks ranks second only to former teammate Cory Schneider.
During the 2013-14 season, he got traded back from the Canucks to the Panthers. Luongo holds Florida’s franchise records in games played (480), wins (188), losses (209) and shutouts (33). His 72 career shutouts rank first among all active goaltenders and 11th all-time.
Over his career, Luongo has 360 losses, which is second all-time and first among all active goaltenders. His 952 games played are first among active goalies and fifth all-time. Luongo certainly has Hall of Fame credentials. Even though Joseph isn’t in the Hockey Hall of Fame, he absolutely should be and it shouldn’t affect Luongo’s chances.
Goalies are fickle and often have short life spans in the NHL. Luongo is a rare goalie who has remained among the best in the league despite old age. He’s arguably the best goalie in the history of two franchises. How many goaltenders can say that?

Sure, a Stanley Cup back in 2010-11 would have helped Luongo’s case. Having no Vezina Trophies certainly doesn’t help his cause either. But Luongo has been remarkably consistent and remarkably good.
