Kristaps Porzingis airball leads to T.J. McConnell game-winning shot (Video)
Knicks’ star Kristaps Porzingis air-balled a crucial shot which led to a T.J. McConnell game-winner for the Sixers.
Wednesday night’s Knicks vs. Sixers game was one of the more exciting games of the week despite being a matchup between two mediocre squads.
The Sixers have been awful this year and the Knicks have been struggling to even approach .500 despite having some major talent — Carmelo Anthony, Derrick Rose and Kristaps Porzingis.
Joel Embiid had yet another big game for the Sixers, scoring 21 points and grabbing 14 rebounds. However, he was rejected by Porzingis after trying to get too cute before taking a 10-foot jumper.
The game was back-and-forth and after Porzingis was being praised earlier for a block on Embiid, he missed a crucial shot late in the game — badly.
Up by one, 97-96, with the shot clock winding down and eight seconds left in the game, Porzingis took a wide open three-pointer and air-balled it. The Sixers got the rebound, pushed it up the court and T.J. McConnell stepped up and nailed a buzzer-beater.
You don’t often see Porzingis missing a shot this badly, especially wide open, but he looked to rush it a bit and that led to the poor follow through and an easy Philadelphia rebound.
The Sixers showed some nice poise, concentration and calmness under pressure, knowing the situation and knowing they had time to find an open McConnell for the game-winning jumper as time expired.
Philadelphia is now 11-25 on the season and the fans are starting to trust the process. Seven of the Sixers’ 11 wins have come at home and that might be a nice confidence-boosting victory moving forward.
As long as Embiid continues to play well and the role players, like McConnell, do their job, Philadelphia might not get the No. 1 overall pick this year — maybe that’s what the fans want at this point.
Still, crazy sequence to end the game.
