What does Chargers’ relocation mean for Raiders?

Could the Chargers moving from San Diego to Los Angeles have any impact on the Raiders leaving Oakland?

On Wednesday night, ESPN’s Adam Schefter broke the surprising news of the Chargers being set to move from San Diego to Los Angeles. A timetable for this did not get specified, but a potential location for their games may be at the StubHub Center in Carson, as Schefter also noted. It could very well make them the first of two teams moving this offseason, with the Oakland Raiders not far behind.

Prior to this, the Chargers were not the only NFL team that had been speculated to be moving. The Raiders, also part of the AFC West, have long been looking for a stadium deal. This has been speculated to be Las Vegas with ESPN’s Jim Trotter reporting that the Raiders staying put is “not salvageable.”

The NFL may not adore the idea of two teams moving in one offseason, but unlike the Chargers, the Raiders have had a stadium plan in place for months. It would get approved by the Nevada senate back in October.

The San Diego Tribune had reported that Raiders owner Mark Davis deferred his option to move to Los Angeles before the Chargers news broke on Wednesday evening. So, it seems like this may not have a big effect on plans to move, for now. It does potentially show that Davis is fully locked on moving to Las Vegas, however.

Given the day’s events, it seems like the Raiders will follow up on the Chargers in short order. They can’t get a new stadium in Oakland, so instead of continuing to play at the Oakland Alameda Coliseum, there could be a new home for them in 2017. That is if Davis wants to find a temporary home for the team as a new stadium gets built.
